Baan Malur, the traditional capital of Great House Redoran.

This topic aims to discuss potential interiors for the city. Attached to this post are maps with the interiors numbered, along with a spreadsheet to keep track of what is what.

In the first version of the spreadsheet, it has been already filled in to reflect the exterior. This means banners outside, and buildings such as guard towers.

Let's get planning!

The following numbers correspond to Map 1 (check the filename), and behind them are my suggestions so far:

1 House for elderly Dunmer couple. Their two sons have gone to Vvardenfell to fight the Sixth House there
2 House of a young Redoran woman. Both her parents have gone to Maar Gaan to strengthen the Redoran forces there.
3 Mansion of a noble Redoran minor house?
4 Healer
5 House for a Dunmer, no affiliation
6 House of a Dunmer. Perhaps collects Ashlander trinkets to sell in the city as "quaint" decoration?
7 Bakery perhaps?
8 Enchanter
9 House for a Dunmer, no affiliation
10 Small guard tower
11 House of young Dunmer couple
12 Smith. Maybe armor?
12-B Barracks perhaps? This has three exterior doors. Maybe some connection to the waterworks outside.
13 Trader. Perhaps in general goods.
14 Trader. Perhaps a butcher?
15 Manor of a Redoran minor house. Matriarch still resides here. Patriarch has left for Vvardenfell. One son is Buoyant Armiger (but visiting?), other son is a trainer in the Arena. Two daughters.
16 House for a middle class Dunmer
17 Pawnbroker
18 Tavern. Popular with Arena visitors/gamblers?
19 Manor of a major Redoran family.
20 House for retainers of the family in #19
21 Clothier (of the rich variety), specializing perhaps in special northern Redoran clothing.
22 Smith (perhaps fletcher?)
23 Bookseller. No Imperial books here.
24 House of a Redguard.
25 House of Altmer battlemage
25-B Barracks
26 Smith (Blunt weapons?)

(the B ones are because I messed up the maps!)

Feel free to offer your own ideas for them. Once we reach some sort of agreement, we'll update the spreadsheet.

I never visited Baan Malur. At one of houses may stay Skyrim Mission (how at OE Valenwood or High Rock Missions). This Mission may include ambassadors and traiders (bone carving and other national north trades).

The problem with having Skyrim Mission in Baan Malur is that there's already one in Vanilla Ebonheart, so it'd be a bit redundant.

While I wouldn't mind a representative of the Nordic settlements in the Velothis District staying in the city - either in the council house or in one of the houses or taverns elsewhere - having an entire Skyrim Mission located here is unnecessary.

the skyrim mission in old ebonheart is to the dunmer government

the skyrim mission in baan malur is to the redoran, which is important considering they are neighbors

I keep in mind that skyrim trade ships are floating from Solitude and Winterhold must replenish reserves of water (the water quickly deteriorates). Traders could build trade house . When they replenish reserves, they can buy and sell something.

While I agree some sort of representative for Skyrim to Redoran could be present, I would imagine this being in perhaps the Council building, or possibly near to it.

I think we should focus on the city in quadrants, so maybe it's best to hear what you guys think about my suggestions so far? Feel free to disregard what I've written so far. They're simply my ideas, open to discussion.

If I were going to split up interior claims into sections, I'd probably start with the ones in/near the docks in the upper right cell (plus the Arena because it's awesome), then move clockwise cell by cell saving the council hall for last.

That way the interiors get built out in the direction that the player would most likely pass them when getting there via boat travel (with exception to the Arena because it's an Arena).

Just my 2 cents though, as far as city/interior planning itself goes, my only real contribution atm is for us to include a reference to the Dark Knights (either as actual NPC's or in some journal or log somewhere in the Arena interior), which was what Arena's Blacklight team was supposed to be called back when it was still an Arena fighter: https://www.imperial-library.info/content/go-blades

Perhaps instead of outright calling them "Dark Knights" we could Dunmerify it up, or keep it as is, I don't particularly care which (though I'd lean towards the former personally), but I'd think it'd be cool to see.

I'd originally intended to approach this in a somewhat more abstract fashion, with maps showing the demographic spread within Baan Malur (Redoran in the west, outlanders near the docks, etc.), an overview of the services, that sort of thing. I ended up overshooting and making a very detailed proposal, which rather takes the fun out of it. That said, it's only a proposal, so disagreement is welcome, and if any of the internal logic that went into the proposal is unclear I'll be happy to clarify.

A few notes:
A lot of entries have 'warrior of ______ March'. That means the dwelling houses someone assigned to that particular march. The role of that person is not necessarily martial in nature, and the dwelling might be used by others; family related by blood or adopted.
The ratio of Dunmer to outlander is quite high in Baan Malur, but that's because of a disproportionate number of Redoran warriors guarding the capital. Of course, some of those warriors might be outlanders themselves. By and large, Redoran lands should have a high ratio of outlanders.
Baan Malur's arena is used for settling duels of honour, especially high-profile ones. Gladiatorial combat also takes place, as in the Vivec arena, though the atmosphere is probably more sobre than gladiatorial combat out west. (Outlanders also spectate the Redoran duels for entertainment, the Redoran reaction is mixed but not wholly negative, as witnesses are good). The arena is also used for delivering sermons, and perhaps also peculiar forms of theatre, storytelling and music.

To start with, I renumbered the buildings on Aeven's map to better align with my interiors list:

And here the individual maps:

Northwest, Local Populations (Dunmer, Nord, Orc)

Southwest, Arena

Southeast, Faction Halls

Northeast, Harbour

I should add that one change I would consider based off of my plan is transforming some of the dwellings in the east into shops. For one thing, it makes sense to have shops near the harbour. For another, I think for Tier II cities (so faction capitals), it's generally good to have two concentrations of shops: common merchants with normal wares for the normal population, and fancy merchants (or in the case of House Redoran more specifically specialist shops, like the various smiths) generally located in the faction's area. I feel Baan Malur is rather light on the former.

As though I haven't written enough, I forgot to address the manors. There are not a lot of them in Baan Malur for a faction capital, and there are two parts to that.

First, I had considered adding one or two outlander manors, but in the end felt that there were better uses for the large buildings.
The relative lack of Redoran manors, however, works. Baan Malur is not home to any Redoran clan; it was specifically chosen as a neutral meeting place for the then-unruly proto-Redoran clans to hold council.
As such, the only resident manor is of the Keeper of the Flames, or whatever fancy title, who acts as mayor of Baan Malur, caretaker of its beacon and arbiter of the council. That's building 20. Technically the Warmaster's Tower is a manor as well.
Added to that are the manors of clans that lost territory in the Waters March but were not themselves absorbed by House Hlaalu.

Don't want to get in trouble with Dunmer authorities for a spot of necromancy, but I realized that a room with an Imperial Cult altar would be another thing to possibly put in the Crowned Hearth, at risk of making the place too cluttered.

Definetely not, if the Tribunals shrine is seperate then the imperials one should be the same, the Redoran are the second biggest supporters of the temple it would be wrong having the imperial cult closer than the tribunal.

I'm not sure what you mean; the crowned hearth is effectively a dockside warehouse turned Imperial embassy, with all of the Imperial (government) institutions crammed in. It would be closer to the Redoran council hall by pure proximity as the crow flies, but not at all in terms of prominence and roughly the same in terms of walking distance.

There are too many "Hearths"  in the city, I had misread and thought you meant the Star Hearth which in discord discussion has been used interchanbly with the council hall so thought you'd gone off the rails there.

Chapel with the other instituion seems fair
