Welcome to Tamriel Rebuilt !

Tamriel Rebuilt is a modding project that adds Morrowind's mainland to The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for you to explore. We follow Bethesda Softworks' original lore and creative vision so that you never lose the sense of a coherent game world.

To date, about half of the mainland is playable, with additional in-progress work available for preview. Seek out exciting new adventures in the Telvanni east, the Indoril heartland, and the contentious Aanthirin region. Download Tamriel Rebuilt here

Our team of artists, modders, and writers is passionate about expanding Morrowind into a whole province, complete with diverse new landscapes, cities, stories, and hidden secrets. Though the project is over two decades old, work continues with people like you joining periodically. You can help us reach our goal by becoming a developer today, no experience required.

Also check out Project Tamriel, our sister project. Through shared assets and lore, we are coordinating the (re)building of much more than Morrowind alone.

Tamriel Rebuilt is pleased to announce the release of build 20.02.

20.02 is mainly a bugfix release, requiring the use of Tamriel Data v07.01 or later.

While the focus was on various fixes to recently released quests and the usual corrections of floaters and bleeders, a few minor additions to dialogue and landscape were included as well. These additions include a few new replies to generic topics, a shortcut to Roa Dyr from the other river bank, and Windbreaker Keep, one of Uriel V's abandoned forward ports, in the Padomaic Ocean.

Windbreaker Keep on a typical day

Our next planned release, "Dominions of Dust", with an estimated release date of 2021, will finally see Tamriel Rebuilt reach the western border of the province. The release will focus on three regions: the Ascadian Bluffs, Roth-Roryn and the Armun Ashlands, with parts of the Velothi Mountains thrown in for good measure. Andothren, a major Hlaalu settlement, Teyn, an Imperial holding, and various minor towns and settlements will be the focus of the release. Two Ashlander tribes and two vampire clans will spice things up for those of an unusual and, dare we say, heretical disposition.

If you are interested in making Mainland Morrowind a reality, join us! Tamriel Rebuilt is always looking for new members, even those completely new to modding. We have plenty of helpful guides on our website and friendly people ready to teach you the ropes on our Discord server.

Tamriel Rebuilt - 19.12 Release

Tamriel Rebuilt is pleased to announce the release of build 19.12 - Aanthirin.

In the last Old Ebonheart release, we showed you a glimpse of the lands that once Prophet Veloth himself has passed, who tamed its tumbling waters during his great exodus to the Sacred East; and now, we are presenting you the whole region. Venture through the rich soils and gently flowing waters of Aanthirin, the crossroads of Morrowind.

Newly released area, along with newly created Idaverrano and Wavebreaker Keep

What's New?

The main attraction of this release is the region of Aanthirin; large and unnatural landscape dominated by the Thirr River, the largest river in Morrowind. The region's picturesque landscape hides the vicious power struggle between the encroaching Great Houses. New settlements in the release include Almas Thirr, a Temple stronghold built where the Prophet Veloth and his followers once crossed the river on their great journey to the East, and Roa Dyr, the chapel stronghold of Indoril Ilvi, located in the Indoril-controlled side of the region.

We are also proud to say that this new release adds more than 60 quests to the mainland. Almas Thirr features a lengthy and branching Temple questline where the player is tasked with keeping the fragile peace between House Hlaalu and House Indoril in the face of an impending House War, as well as a sacred Temple order intended for high level players. In addition to a new pilgrimage, faithful acolytes will see their belief tested and perhaps, rewarded. Both back in Old Ebonheart and across the Thirr River in Hlaalu-controlled lands, players can find many more adventures waiting for them. Race a man who runs as fast as lightning, collect bounties to earn a lord's favor, help an ambitious wizard to break the laws of time and space, and investigate the disappearance of a sailor in the isolationist lake town of Aimrah and many more.

Changing Times

While we are all waiting on the inevitably delayed next release, it is time to reflect a bit.

Tamriel Rebuilt was started in 2001 by Ender, Ash, ActSmiley, MrSlugworth, Moorkh, and others on the very old (green) Bethesda forums. Planning began before the release of TES III: Morrowind and development began as soon as the game and Construction Set were available.

A lot of things have happened since then: two expansions and eight “DLCs” later, Morrowind GotY was essentially said and done. Everything afterwards was made by the fans.

And what happened was nothing short of a miracle: aside the usual unofficial patches and myriads of mods, the Morrowind Graphics Extender (and its fork MGE XE), the Morrowind Code Patch, the Morrowind Script Extender (and its fork MWSE-Lua), and of course the engine rewrite OpenMW have kept TES III going long after contemporary games like Wizards and Warriors have become unplayable and forgotten.

One of the most groundbreaking developments of the last years was the advent of TES3MP. A multiplayer fork of OpenMW and slated to be integrated come 1.0 (soon followed by Tamriel Rebuilt the Full Release) has turned a 17 year old game into a coop adventure.

What people were laughing about 17 years ago...

TR19XX - No, we just don't learn

Sometimes it is good to rethink past promises.

Back in 2018, we realized a very important fact:

A lesson has been learned: Tamriel Rebuilt works badly with deadlines. While the March (then Spring) deadline allowed focused development, meeting the deadline itself proved to be unachievable time and again.

This lesson, unfortunately, did not last into 2019 as the question "when will the next release come out" was tenatively answered by an speculative "July or August seems possible" and then things went on their merry way.

Well, here we are again: announced a deadline and it won't work out.

There is good news, however, just as there was in 2018: the next version will be released and it will be released soon, with some cool last-minute stuff.

Almas Thirr, with new stairs, changing the face of cantons forever.

The big holdup is the same as last time: quests and assets.

TR19XX at last counting will add something like 60 to 70 quests to the Mainland, including some surprising and extensive questlines that will amaze attentive players. Some will be added to old locations on the eastern Mainland, giving a bit more content to our older regions. This, unfortunately, took more time than expected and we are currently in the last parts of the implementation phase.

Tamriel_Data meanwhile, as a collaborative project, is primarily under the aegis of Project Tamriel. While it would be nice to think that we can just put our things into Tamriel_Data, leave beta testing to players, and call it a day, there are two other projects' worth of contributions to consider. Additionally, free projects can't get away with getting players to beta test releases, so we need to be extra careful.

Both Province Cyrodiil and Skyrim: Home of the Nords are in the process of adding ample new assets for their own looming releases, and the merging and testing process is unfortunately taking more time than expected. That is not to say that we were sitting idly.

New Roth-Roryn textures.

Stay tuned, it's not going to be long - but, no more public deadlines. Second time is the charm!

Who's there? Not a "knock knock" joke, sadly.

Update (2019-06-20)

It's been over a month since this blog post was originally posted. Some things have changed since then and while I'm currently too busy to write a full part II post, some information is important enough to communicate it anyway. So, instead of reading "Who's there? It's me, you idiot!" (which was going to circle back to ManaUser's [MW Modding History] aptly named fix), you are going to see some red text in here.

Tamriel Rebuilt - Available for Free!

Obviously an April's fool Article.

25 years ago Bethesda Game Studios released The Elder Scrolls I: Arena and began a journey into a fantastical and exciting world. 19 years ago, Tamriel Rebuilt began development just before TES III: Morrowind was released.

To celebrate these dual anniversaries, we at Tamriel Rebuilt Fan Studios have decided to follow in Bethesda‘s footsteps and release our premium product Tamriel Rebuilt VI: Old Ebonheart for free!

We are excited to offer you hours of excitement in the premium province mod for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

Tamriel Rebuilt VI: Old Ebonheart

The mod you have all been waiting for, is now available for free! Richard "Dynamo" Stallman would be spinning in his grave if he was dead, because with "free" of course we mean "gratis"!

But this is not enough for us! Of course, we also offer Tamriel Data for free!

Go find them for your Tamriel Rebuilt Launcher here:

Alternatively, you can order them from a Oblivion Nexus TESNexus Nexusmods site near you:

Special Offers!

In addition to the free release of Tamriel Rebuilt VI: Old Ebonheart, we are excited to reach out to you with these exciting new offers in our webshop:

  • Elder Scrolls Online Tamriel Rebuilt addon – Doesn‘t matter if you are a fan of Tamriel Rebuilt or Elder Scrolls Online, this quest and dialogue replacement plugin makes both canons compatible.
  • Novelty Mug Series – New in our novelty mug series, the „Dragons ate my homework“ mug makes your coffee (or tea, we don‘t judge) twice as good. Beware: the mug might be insubstantial if you follow main game canon!

Status Update 2019

It is that time of the year again: spring is here and we are slowly gearing up for a content release.

First of all, thanks to everybody who voted for us in the 2018 Urscars. We are very proud and happy to have received first place in several categories and these little cuties:

As one of the big lessons we've learned last year is "don't overestimate yourself", this time we are more cautious and vague. Amidst the cleanup period of TR1807, general real life preoccupation, and a desire to avoid a repeat of last year's burnout, we are hoping for a summer or autumn release.

What's going to be in it? Well, it's going to be different: TR1807 "Old Ebonheart" was a highly dense release, low on landmass but with an abundance of quests, as Old Ebonheart is a unique location, second in importance only to Almalexia.

"Aanthirin" on the other hand will have a lot more locations to visit, more dungeons to delve, but overall fewer quests.

Landmass Scope

"Aanthirin" will round out the actual Aanthirin section and move the borders of TR_Mainland decisively on the west bank, into Hlaalu lands. The east and south are also fairly well represented.

The planned release area.

The Western Bank - Hlaalu-Thirr

Dotted with small settlements, plantations, and lookouts, the western bank is more developed than the Indoril eastern bank.

18.09 Bug Fix Release

We are happy to announce the 18.09 release!

This comes neatly on the anniversary of Tamriel_Data, which contains the shared assets of Tamriel Rebuilt, Skyrim Home of the Nords, and Province: Cyrodiil.

The 18.09 is mainly a release of bug fixes. Included are various fixes to the bugs in the last release's quests as well as a facelift to a particular Morag Tong hideout that threatened all of Tamriel Rebuilt with its existence (okay, not really). We thank you, the Morrowind community, for you continued support and for reporting the bugs you've encountered. Keep 'em coming.

Our next planned release focuses on adding more quests to specific areas in Telvannis as well as starting work on the Thirr River Valley. The Thirr is projected to contain quests for Hlaalu, the Temple, and various shenanigan-happy NPCs in need of a player to save them from, well, their shenanigans.

To install TR:

  • MD5: d84780315a328bd8072d84bce0fc6627

Important! Tamriel Rebuilt requires Tamriel_Data v06.1 or later!
Also, if you want to play this new release using an old save, make sure to update your save file with Wrye Mash for things to go smoothly.

Finally, if you are interested in contributing but don't know where to start, start here!

What's Up with the Hlaalu-Dres Alliance?

I write this as an answer to a startling twist that the story of Morowind's Great Houses took in the canon writings after TES3. This answer leans heavily on TR lore, but I think even without it, it could still stand on its own and put sense to the shakey alliance that Hlaalu and Dres created after Helseth's marriage to a Dres lady.
