@_@... speaking of which I really should get my drivers license (but its a tricky/compicated process here though (in this state anyway)).

Poor Ausies, Brits and Americans. We Dutchlanders can drink from the age of 16. But it's not like nobody ever drinks before 16 or anything. I do have to say that I find it somewhat ridiculous that you're considered responsible enough at 16 to drive a car, but aren't allowed to even touch alcohol until you're 21.

I'm 18 now, will be turning 19 in april.

I think the idea is that they are responsible enough to drive a car IF they aren't allowed to touch alcohol. :P

The chances of killing or injuring yourself or somebody with a car are higher then injuring or killing yourself with alcohol. Therefore it seems only reasonable that alcohol is available at an earlier age then cars.

I think the reasoning behind putting the legal drinking age at 21 is that if kids can't drink while they're young they won't get absolutely shitfaced when they're older, wiser and allowed to drink. This generally leads to 21 year olds with very little drinking experience, large amounts of money, a lot of spare time and... cars.

But let's not make this thread an alcohol-related thread and talk about our ages.

I'm 18.... oh wait, did I already say that? Must be Korsakoff :P

It is 16 to drink in Germany as well, which is where I was when I turned 16. Unfortunately there was a gap when I was 20 and I moved to the US before I could legally drink again. It was very odd. That and I actually needed to get a license to go anywhere, which I didn't need to get around in Germany.

Im not sure its still 16 in Germany, I think it might be higher now. I know alot of countries in the EU raised their age a year ago or so.

Denmark used to be 16 I think? now its 17 or 18.

In Italy it's 16. That's strange because all age limits for things come from royal laws (before 1942, then) where people became of age at 21 but they could start drink at 16 and smoke at 13... :|

It was 16 to drink, 18 to stay in the bars/clubs past midnight or to drink spirit/distilled beverages, when I was there last. It could have changed, but I seriously doubt it because drinking and beer are such an important part of most festivals and the decision is usually up to the parents if they want to allow their children to have a beer or wine. I don't know anyone that is still 16 over there, so I'm not sure if they would even know. Last I heard, it was just talk from some of the political parties.

I'm about 16 and a half. I Don't really care about the drinking age. I Don't plan on drinking either, but I beleive the reason they have the drinking age high in the US is because alchohal is supposively bad for developing brains...or something like that ?(

false. in the 60's the age was 18, drinking was considered part of being an adult like voting and being drafted. after vietnam ended the leading cause of death for the 18 year olds because car crashes, so many groups lobbied to raise the drinking age. technically there is no national law for how old you have to be to drink and its supose to be set by each state. however, states only get funding for highways from the gov't if their age is 21.

holy fuck on a stick im almost legal ;(

I get the impression drink-driving is endemic in American culture. Which is weird because over here almost all alcohol-fuelled social problems are worse, except for that because it's completely socially unacceptable.

24... but dating a woman thats 32 (thank "god" for models, she looks my age!). Ahhh yes, my 18th, I remember it was the same day as my last yr12 exam, went to the pub imediently afterwards :)

As for what i remember of the '80s... well, two things... me and the mighty VL Commodore! (for non-aussies: 1986 model Holden family car, Holden being the Australian branch of GM, and currently the only branch not asking for government hand-outs. The modern equiveilent would be the pontiac G8 -i think- in the US, and as some kinda vauxall in the UK/EU).
