Theminimanx's Interior Showcase

Post by Theminimanx »

So after a year of lurking and telling people their work isn't quite as good as it could be, I figured it was only fair I gave you guys the chance to do the same.
I tried to fit this interior into ex_vivec_h_09, though for obvious reasons, this did not succeed fully. You should be able to find the interior at "theminimanx's interior showcase".
Have fun!

Good start. However item placement is a bit off.
The bed is bleeding into the baseboard, the alembic is bleeding into the table, the calcinator is floating, barrel_01_Ingredients (4697, 4213, 13089) is bleeding into the floor, and barrel_01_Ingredients (4765, 4217, 13089) is floating. All the bottles will need some X and Y rotation as well.

Please go over all the items and check for things bleeding/floating. If you need help with item rotation, there is a good tutorial at the bottom of http://tamriel-rebuilt.org/old_forum/viewtopic.php?t=24574.

Good points :)
File is clean, light settings look good. Grid snapping is fine. Excellent placement of the mortar - just the way I like it.

Just a thought - wouldn't this person keep most the Alchemist stuff up in the lab. You might want to put the potions and books up there as well. This would free up the downstairs to have more living area. Also - it is typical for ingredients to be placed on a piece of paper, as apposed to just sitting on the bookcase.

We are a bit anal about item placement, but with a bit of practice (that's one of the reasons for the showcase) rotating objects to sit properly will become a lot easier.

Keep up the good work. I look forward to your next submission.

There are only two light sources and tapestries in this interior. That's extremely little considering its size. Try to add some of those lamps that hang on ropes from the ceiling and fill all places that are not blocked by large furniture with tapestries. I'd also add another rug on the lower level.

That way the interior will look less empty and have a pleasant cozy feel to it.

Beside that, there is one instance of style mixing going on through the bed "de_r_bed_19", which should be replaced by a de_p one.

Keep at it! It's a good first try ;)

I moved some objects around, redid a lot of the placement and added a rug and tapestry. That's a version 1.1 in my book.

FULL REVIEW
Clean, Northmarker used, no loading errors, lighting is ok.

General Comments:
The place still feels a bit vacant and one dimensional.
I get that this person is an Alchemist, lives a quiet solitary life, but nothing else. If this is a single person, why use guar screens? See if you can tell me something else about this person.

During my first look at this showcase, I did notice you used the trap doors to add the second floor. I was willing to let that go, but on second thought, I'd prefer you to put in a staircase. This will greatly reduce the empty feeling. I suggest not making the place any bigger, just replace some of the architectural pieces. If you need to move a large number of pieces (for example the 2nd floor), select one of the corner pieces then hold down the ctrl key and select the rest of the pieces. This will allow you to still use grid snapping to position the large pieces, while having the smaller pieces not move relative to their current placement within the room.

Other ways to fill the place:
Try using furn_de_p_shelf_02 (they are flat).
Some windows would be nice.
Does this person grow any ingredients? (plants are good filler).
Food containers, clothing, utensils, baskets - oh and don't forget to put in the obligatory bucket - no int should be without one.

Limit the number of Skill books to just 1 per interior. Only bookstores or libraries will have more than 1.

Could use some more food containers – possibly change out the ingredient ones on the first floor for food.

Add some more lights as Ragox suggested - but please, do NOT just stick a rope in the ceiling and hang a lantern from it. MW did way too much of that, and it is a cheap/easy way to go, and in my opinion looks horrible. One approach is to try to make it look like the rope is attached to something in the ceiling. I place the ends of the curved rope into the knotted end of furn_de_rope_07. But there are many more options available, see what you can come up with.

I would make the structural changes first before going through the following list. You will probably be repositioning quite a few items to make the stairs fit.

CHANGES that need to be MADE
Please do not be intimidated by the number of items that need fixing. This is very typical of most first time modders. Most of the problems are of the same type and only need minor corrections. One of the main reasons for the showcase is to let the modder know to-what-level of detail we are concerned with.

All-in-all not a bad first interior. Some of the small items on the de_p bookshelves are very well positioned.
Once the staircase is in, just a little bit more clutter and this will be an excellent interior. :)

Full Review
Significant improvement over the last one. I couldn't figure out why a bunch of the barrels were bleeding into the floor - possibly when you moved them or did you hit "F" twice. But either way, they just need to be raised and re-"F"'d. Try to pay closer attention to the selection box. I personally go through each item in the "Cell View" and rotate around the item to be sure the selection box looks good from all angles.

When creating new objects, please following the TR naming convention. For a showcase, just start with TR_, for a claim, it should start with TR_iX_XXX (X's would be replaced with claim ID number). Please, rename the desk.

Once your done with all the technical fixes, try to add a few more items related to fishing. The rod was a good start.

Keep up the good work. I look forward to the next version.

Not really a full update, but here's an interior with one barrel_01 (the one at 5135, 3798, 13088) f-ed once, and all the others f-ed until they'd go to a lower floor.

Much much better. You've just about got rotation down.

I know that you spent some time on bk_AlchemistsFormulary, but it still is bleeding too much into the table. I'll give you a good position/rotation for it:
Position
X:4965.708
Y:3726.205
Z:13126.943
Rotation
X:358.7
Y:1.4
Z:334.2

The goblet would need to be moved (a trivial move), but the book is sitting properly on the table.

There are only a couple of items that I'd like you to fix:
1)apparatus_j_mortar_01 (5305, 4205, 13416).
You have this sitting on several triangles. I'd suggest moving it into the corner of the desk, so that it is only on 1 triangle, rescale to 0.5, adjust rotation using the selection box as a guide, then scale back to 1.0 and adjust the position so that the whole pointy bottom is just below the surface (like you had it originally on the flat topped desk).
2)TR_Ingred_Meat_Cliffracer (4946, 3946, 13394) is still bleeding too much into the paper.

Once these 2 minor corrections are made, I'll have no problem recommending you for promotion to interiors.

Thanks for the help with the book. Looks like we just had a difference of opinion there, I much prefer a minor bleed over a minor float. Ah well, I'll just stick to dishes and cutlery next time.

Anyway, this should be the (hopefully) last upload of the showcase, version 1.4.

Fantastic! The mortar and racer meat look good.
I am recommending you for promotion to Interiors.

Just so we're clear - the book is not floating. It is touching the table at more than 3 points. The entire right side of the book is in contact with the table, and the lower left corner is touching the table too. If the book was as rigid as the model, and place on the table at that location, the one corner would be up in the air. That is not a floating item.
An item is floating if it has less than 3 points touching the surface below. This is from basic trigonometry. However, we do allow occasionally only 2 points to touch. This usually occurs with long thin objects like staffs, spears or long blades.
