Prisioners Carnival

Post by ismugglecows »

I think there should be this place in at least one of the major cities where prisoners are publicly tortured and killed in front of an audience (people who live in that town or where ever)For their entertainment. Some of the torturing devices could be like a guillotine or a strecher which pulls the person into for different peices. Or some less gorey ones like a rat in a can on someone's chest then the chest is set on fire. Tell me what you think :)

Back it up with lore and we'll do it. Oh, and learn medieval torture methods, the guillotine is way to recent and the rat quite frankly is too mundane.

On a related note, does anyone think trial by ordeal could be used at some point in a quest?
In the 550's Byzantine Generals Narses and Liberius were winning battles into their 80's. Retirement programs, though no longer including raping and pillaging, have clearly improved since.

Maybe some prisoners in shackles, or those things where your head and arms are stuck in and left to be ridiculed in public or a stand with a noose for hangings, but we won't be doing too much gore in TR, we want to keep things tasteful. Besides, imperial law is pretty damn civilized for their level of technology.

Hanging is usually what they opted for in most crimes since all you need is a bit of rope. Beheading is a bit more upclass and the guilottine first appeared in 1307 but wasnt really popularised until the french revolution. Usually you had the axe for anyone who was a very naughty person and the sword if they were powerful enough to request it (cleaner death). For real bad boys you were hung drawn and quartered (see the last bit of Braveheart). Incidently there is a pub in London called the Hung Drawn and Quartered, its right across from the Tower of London and near where they used to burn witches. Minor crimes would get a flogging or time in the stocks.
If you want a roman aspect to it, real nobles would kill themselves by falling on their own sword, so they didnt need to assign a proper punishment, they dished it out themselves. A classics master from my school a few decades ago killed himself by impaling his chest with a saw. Their equivalent of being Hung Drawn and Quartered was Crucifixion.

In the First Era, people were commonly beheaded using an axe. Don't know if that's still going on after about two thousand years.

I guillotine would be a great way to die actually. Far from torture. :) I don't think that it is used in TES lore, however, I might be wrong on that. It has been a while since I walked through Daggerfall but if there is a guillotine to be found anywhere, it would be there.

As for public torture, I seriously doubt it would exist to any real degree in Dunmer society. Torture certainly is around, but it's mostly a thing done in the dungeons. The need for public violence is more than satisfied with the Arenas.
Trudging through the relentless Skyrim snowstorms, the lone Paladin looks on in sorrow as the land of Tamriel evolves without him; his mind occupied with other matters.

beheading and quartering are probably two of the most abundant since they are the oldest and take the least thought. *Side thoughts. Would Dunmer use guar?*

There were a lot of torture devices in Daggerfall's dungeons.

Would be good only for low-level Nerevarines... Once you start making yourself constant restore health or waterbreathing items, most ordeals become a cakewalk. "Yes, I bath daily in hot lava, for a whole minute. It's a surefire, hehe, way of getting rid of those pesky Blighted Ashlice that are carried by storms in the Molag Amur region. When there aren't any convenient lava flow, I opt for a three-hour stay underwater, to drown them. What's your ordeal again, staying immersed 10 minutes or walking on fire, as usual? Maybe fighting an ogrim?"
