FLESH's Showcase

Post by FLESH »

Hi all,

Flesh here, local SpeedTree guy. The first tree I'm trying is this one: http://img134.imageshack.us/my.php?image=inquisitiontree8bd.jpg

Here is my current progress:
http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h134/FLESH_01/TR/ Newest version will go by the biggest number. Any comment and constructive criticism is appreciated.

You sir, are my hero. Judging from Morden and others' comments, SpeedTree is a pain to use, but you've made that look great. I'd really like to see that in game!

And welcome back. :)

Thank you very much :) I've been using it for a while, but I wouldn't call it a pain, you just need to get used to it hehe.

Moved this back to showcase until FLESH gets promoted (which doesn't look like it should take long) Flesh, can you see the last few posts before mine? (order should be Gez, Elfane, Blackbird, Gez)

Wow, alot of posts made while I was sleeping. Let me address.

I came here because I like to make trees :) Infact I asked LN if you needed any.

I was an old modder (made an int) but tried to swap e-mail accounts and for some reason this made my account inactive. I solved the issue by PMing Lady N, but before that I used to use a different account because I didn't know how to make this one work.

Yep, I've put a lot of trees into the CS before.

Don't know what happened with all the moving around, I just went down to the very bottom of the forums to see if there were any new posts in my thread :P

Thanks for all the comments and compliment.

I would prefer if we had some custom textures for me to slap on these. Does anyone feel like wipping up some bark? leaves aren't required but it's always nice to see something new. Give them to me in .tga format and I'll convert them into .dds when I need to.

And thank you Nemon :) So should I change the tree or should I go ahead and put it into the CS?

I'd say you should export and upload it so Aro can take a look. Once he does that I think he will probably recommend you for promotion. Then I will promote you and move this thread back to the modeling forum.

I'm very happy to see someone that is working with speedtree :) Can't wait for the models. I hope I can get my pc working back in the right way fast, btw...

Thriggy, Gez and others:
When I found this thread, it was in the concept art section. Someone cut it out of another thread in that forum. I dunno who that was. All I did was moving this into models and textures forum (which is accesable for all registered users, FIY, admins :P)

Righty-o here it is, with a screen shot. Problems I will fix, from the screen you can see the leave textures are a bit, hmm, not right? :P Well thats a .dds error, I'll get on it tomorrow as it's a bit late atm. But here is the screen. http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h134/FLESH_01/TR/?action=view&current=TESConstructionSet2008-04-1722-08-3.jpg

I think they should be just place holders anyway. But here is the files if you want to check it out. Looks funky in the CS hehe.

I don't like giving it in like this, but the only major problem I see is the leave texture, so I hope thats ok if I fix it tomorrow.

EDIT: Also, too many leaves, it's probably because of the fronds, will remove ;)

Lady Nerevar, could you look at the files? Becuase my software is still useless...

Are you having dds troubles? Keep in mind few things. If your texture has an alpha channel, it should use DXT3 conversion. If not, a smaller DXT1 file will be just enough. Also, keep it in the right size. DDS files should use exponentials of two(sorry if my english is weak here :P). 1,2,4,8,16,32,16,32,64,128,256, etc. :)

your leaf texture is missing an alpha chanel, hence the lack of transparency. white are parts of the texture that you want to appear visible, black is the transparent portions.

ill take a look at it tomorow

Yeah it's really odd as those textures have alpha channels. But they are all .tga's and I used PhotoShop to convert them to .dds

Re: FLESH's SpeedTree Models.

Going back on the topic of the tree mesh, version 1.1 is better than 1.0 but could you still densify more the branches to give this tree the "stone pine" effect from the concept?

Yes, I can. You want them to fork more right, rather than just adding new branches?

EDIT: I will add new branches of course, but the forking effect is what is sought after?

Both. Make it fork more, and add more branches, to get this sort of umbrella effect.

It's the leaves that make it look like that. I'm playing around with settings but its hard to get a flat bottom canopy.

Do you have Force Full Tree Load on in preferences? Could be a file placing error, although it's strange that the CS even let you put it there if it is one.

Ok, going by Gez's comments I've added a more umbrella like effect to the tree. Screens:

It's not easy to get the leaves to make that perfect shape, but I hope that is close. Comments?

What version is that and where did you get it? I'm another speedtree person, but I'm rarely around anymore due to school.

How well does it seed? When you randomize it in the CAD do you get good results? Have you tested it in the game?

I haven't touched speedtree in ages. I can't even remember the proper file paths. Where are you putting your speedtree/leaf files?

I assume some of that post was to me, or all of it? I haven't really tested out seeding, is that something that should be done? I've tested it in the CS, I however did find that the tree in the CS wasn't exactly what I had in SpeedTree, which is odd and I can't honestly find a reason for this. Is it the seeding as you mention? It hasn't happened before, or maybe it has and I didn't notice. Plus the .dds needs to be fixed, but that isn't a problem.

That probably has something to do with seeding. Seeding creates random variations of your tree based on the parameters you set in the CAD. You can test how well your tree seeds in the CAD by going to the Global tab and selecting "Randomize".. then hit the Compute(F5) button.

When the Construction Set populates the worldspace with your speed tree file, it generates all these random seeds so that you never see the same tree twice. You'll want to be sure that your tree values can handle this process. Give it a try next time you open the CAD.

I thought it might be something like that. Question, if I type the seed number (that I get from CAD) into the CS when importing my tree, will it import the same tree I made in CAD?
