Looks awesome! :D

On the shell, do you think you could maybe (don't do this if it looks silly) get in some stuff so that it looks like it might be a lesser descendant of the Skar (Emperor Crab massive shell in Ald'ruhn)? I think that thing's got some ridges and stuff that might be cool to kinda emulate. Or not, dunno.

tried out putting the shell on, then i kinda got carried away with editing it :)

here's a couple of screenies

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu195/mark507_album/morrowind/creatures/seacrab3.jpg

i gotta round off the edges of the spikes to match the shell, and maybe edit a couple of UV maps, but other than that it looks good imo

maybe you should use it as a larger crab creature, a rare spawn maybe? cause it doesn't look like a normal creature to me

Veery nice.

Yeah, I think you're right. Keep the old 'Skar-feature-less' version, and we can use that as the default Sea Crab.

Then, we can roll out this version for a unique boss battle or supercrab of some kind.

Only thing I would say is that perhaps the legs need bulking out a bit, and stopping them being so 'bent in' on themselves and insecty. More like in the image on the right here (though bulkier somewhat). But only if that wouldn't require a lot of animation rejigging and stuff that would make it not worth it.

Final thing (this one is infinitely minor, and you don't have to bother at all if you don't wanna) is that perhaps the Skar-ridges should be 'reversed' so that the biggest ones are at the back, rather than over his eyes? I think that's how the original Skar is set out, and it would be interesting to see how it looked in comparison. But the current version is fine for our purposes, if you'd rather not have to do all this random crap I keep asking for. :P

hope u dont mind my interupting :D

Looking at the newer images the only problem i really see is the two 'super' spikes over the eyes. The smaller ones that cover the rest of the shell look quite nice and natural. I have to agree with BC on the legs though... They seem a little mechanical to me (reminds me of dwemer spider centurians a bit).

This is all just opinion of course, so feel free to ignore it... or not...

nah, it's ok, i usually get either carried away or half-arsed bout stuff, so some good criticism is always nice

i'll get round to doing it later though, cause right now i cba

edit: oh and the 'super spikes' are now on the other side as BC requested, i'm not getting rid of them even if they don't look natural, as they are part of the original skar shell, and i don't think a giant crab is too natural anyway

YAY SOMEONES FIXING THE SEA CRAB! :) (just like I asked :P)

Oh wow, so you decided to actaully replace the whole Orignal sea crab? or did you just modify it?

I didnt mind the way the old one looked, I just suggested it needs fixing with animation. But Its look good and Im eager to seeing this one in gameplay anyway.

Great work so far :)

Ok, here's an update.

I've got good and bad news.
Bad news, the skar crab is dead, when I saved both my backup and actual file, max decided to corrupt them both just to piss me off.

Good news, shortly afterwards I opened up the original crab mesh and well... quite frankly went crazy and came up with this:

Too lazy to post screens, check my sig on the bethesda forums instead.

The mellow expression it seems to have makes me laugh.

Nice, though if that's to go ahead, I think a more 'tailored' texture would be necessary.

The legs could still do with tweaking, if you have time.

I also think the standard boring crab from up top would be worth having as well, if you could give us both?

Anyway, thanks for an update. :)

Sorry then, Anyway, the problem with altering the animations is that they're imported as bones. 0_0

Bones suck... bad.

So I'm doing it from scratch, it's not necassary, but I'm gonna do it anyway, I've learnt some of CAT, so it should be easy to do some crab anims.

If anyone here has CAT, these animations won't be so new to you, they're pretty basic, I'm just posting this vid to show others what the animations will be like.

http://s647.photobucket.com/albums/uu195/mark507_album/?action=view&current=crab.flv

Animations Finished:

RunForward
Idle
WalkForward
edit: Attack 1
Attack 2
Idle 1
KnockDown
Death

Am I missing any? (except turning, I'm about to do those)

I'm doing pretty well huh? I started this just this morning ^_^ CAT rules!

Looks very good, certainly more crablike.

My only concern is that these animations might be too good for Morrowind? I have no idea if that would be the case, but I trust you know what you're doing.

Oh, the other thing is that this guy is meant to swim and live underwater mostly. But I think your anim could suit that. Maybe just a tad less foot-dragging and swaying? (Also remember that this guy is a huge-ass thing - so the spideryness could be toned down a tad)

Anyway, I'm not complaining. It's good to see you back. :)

From what I understand, it's possible to make seperate animations for swimming and walking, though I can't say I've seen that many swimming crabs myself. Should be easy enough if I just tweak some settings.

Too good for morrowind, I'll take that as a compliment, if it comes down to it I can easily reduce the keys, though I wont intentionally create shit anims, I have my pride...

I was thinking of sizing him between the current seacrab and an Oblivion Mudcrab, but I'll edit it if it needs to be massive.

If you're intending to downsize him, that should be alright. Just let us know you're intending to do that. ;)

And yeah, that was a compliment. But also a serious question. I don't know whether Morrowind can only handle more limited and less fluid animation, but like I say, I trust you to get things working just lovely. :)

If you could create swimming anims, that would be brilliant.

And yes, this is looking fantastic.

The crab looks fantastic, although I agree with BC on one point... I think the swaying is just a tad bit too much, even for underwater.

The Morrowind engine can handle decent animations, it all depends on your frame rate, if you want, grab RX31's mocap pack, and get your fps up to 60 (though free mocaps generally look crap, especially if you don't remove some of the keys).
These animations are only 1 key every 3 or 4 frames, which isn't bad at all.

I've changed the running animations, they should (hopefully) fit both small and large crabs, as long as you set the speed correctly. It'll probably be around the same size of the sea crab, it'll just look smaller because of it's larger legs and smaller body. Oh and the swaying's gone, that was just like a 5 second edit, I just had to edit some fcurve graphs.

I've just got turning animations and tweakin to do, I'll get a vid up tomorrow. I'm not really sure about the swimming animations tough, cause I seriously don't know how crabs swim, it looks more like he's jumping. 0_-
So any help in that department would be much appreciated. ^_^

And thanks for the comments everyone!

Excellent, excellent. This is great stuff.

For the swimming, I also have no idea how crabs swim (despite the name), but I imagine if you just put in something plausible, like 'legs pushing backwards simultaneously', that'd look alright.

Or I could dig out some wildlife docs on YouTube, see what Attenborough's got to say about it. :P

Kept coming up with a species of crab when I searched, but I eventually found one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8OLMSg9zjE

Yeah, they just swing their legs about wildly by the looks of it...

Now how should I go about doing this, it would just look pure hilarious in game. Which I'm not sure is a good thing. One things obvious though, they ain't meant to swim. :o

edit: crabs like these: http://flyingfishshop.com/GMPicts/CrabBlue.jpg

can swim with ease apparently, so I'll model the back legs like paddles, and just make the swimming animation look appropriate.

Ok, how about this: http://s647.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid647.photobucket.com/albums/uu195/mark507_album/morrowind/animations/Movie_0001.flv&fs=1&os=1&ap=1

Sorry about the crappy quality, and you might not be able to tell what a few of these are just yet, but I'm not exactly a pro at making videos. I think there's still a lot to be improved on, so feel free to post up some improvements, I'd like to try and get this just right.

Also what do you think of the swimming animation? I'm not too sure about it myself. Note that it will probably be slower in game, depending on what the seacrab's speed is at, and due to the large distance the animation covers.

Those animations are awesome, Dirnae! Although a swimming crab is still news to me, I think it would look better if it simply walked along the ocean floor.

Totally brilliant.

Only thing is that (again due to hefty size) the 'boxer's bounce' in his idle is a little out of character, I think. Just a gentle sway would be good. While the bounce would make a perfect Kingler or Krabby for a Pokémon game, it doesn't suit a 'non-sentient' creature. :P

@ Cathartis, Morrowind creatures living underwater have to swim, they cannot 'underwater-walk'. So this animation suits that fine. (And Dirnae showed the vid of a swimming crab, so there's proof! :D)

I'd prefer it underwater walking myself, but if it must swim, then that's fine by me too.

I use 3ds max 9. I know basic Bender too, though I never use it for animation.

Ok, I've been working on this since my last post, I haven't dissapeared again yet, I've just been slowed down hugely...

I've been doing a few requests for people on the BGSF, and still am, so this has been progressing slower than usual. I figured out how to get my animations into a useable state almost flawlessly using a transition rig, with the animation tools I'm using you can't export them straight away. But, the newest Niftools exporter seems to export animations which look perfectly fine, yet for some reason screw up in game, and the Morrowind animation kit (I should probly report that on the tracker (?_?) ). So I'm gonna roll back to an older version later today and see if I can get the animations in game.

btw, what kinda texture size is ok for this?

Textures should look like they came from Morrowind. So whatever that means in practical terms.

Finally figured out the problem, it requires a lot of animation tweaking, if I can get the models I've got onto the edited animation, expect this within a week, if not, maybe two.

I really don't like the current bright red crab, it stands out in Morrowind too much, I'm thinking a brown, or some earthy colour, it depends on if I can get the right shade whether it'll look crap or not.
So before I change it, there's no reason why I should keep it red is there, like some dialogue or something? If that's the case a duller red would be fine as well.

I've always held the opinion that if someone can't be bothered to look at the forum and respond in their claim thread, that they should have their things revoked. People tend to not like me doing this outside of interiors though generally.

If you give me the green light to revoke this then I will do so, but I'm not going to e-mail dirnae.
