TR NPC Claim 4-38-Red [Bloodthirsty Crustacean/Yeti]

Post by Why »

Nine cells. The Redoran village of Verarchen and immediate surroundings. See All Things Redoran for basic instructions and storythings on House Redoran. Don't make this a Dunmer-only area, I'd like to have some integrated outlanders around.

Exterior cells of special interest: (-16,-7) Verarchen.

Interiors included in this claim:
i4-1 - Guard tower
i4-2 - Family manor. Don't fill it with servants, but with grannies and sons and daughters. Doesn't need to be on Kartur Council lest it get overcrowded, though if you have a good plan for which a local council position is necessary I'm open to suggestions.
i4-3
i4-4
i4-5 - General trader
i4-6 - Foodseller
i4-7
i4-8
i4-9
i4-10 - Smith
i4-11 - Servants of i4-12. Try to give it a Redoran touch rather than just making them a bunch of housemaids. Maybe there's a warrior-in-training who maintain the premises in exchange for guidance from the local swordmaster. Maybe it's a small family who were saved by the nobles in i12 in a battle long forgotten and now serve them. I don't know.
i4-12 - Family manor of local nobles. Probably could be Councillor rank. Needs story.
i4-13 - Guard tower
i4-307 - "Large bandit cave". Feel free to come up with something more exciting though.
i4-308 - Comberry farm just south of Verarchen.
i4-309 - "Small uninhabited cave" very close to town. It's got some crystal thingies going on. Feel free to have some fun with this. Maybe the water contains hallucinogenic chemicals and the locals believe Almsivi gives them visions when bathing in the pool. Maybe it's something else altogether. I don't know. It could just be uninhabited.

Use the file attached to this post. I'd like to hear some plans for the important NPCs in the claim message, because I don't really have any yet but I'd like them to fit into the overall Redoran narrative. A special point of attention is the claim just west of this one, 4-43. That one contains a group of three Redoran buildings associated to a family down on their luck. (link) Feel free to create some rumours about the place for later use.

There's one tomb that still requires an interior, don't worry about that one. We'll make a quest-specific thing for it later (probably to feature in whatever quest ends up happening in the 4-43 claim).

I'd like to claim this, if that's alright.

Remind me again of the latest procedure regarding .esms and dependencies etc.? Do I work direct to the file, as traditional, or are we working in .esp dependency mode, as with quest claims?

You should work directly in this file; anything else runs afoul of the CS's stupidity.

Nemon, do you reckon this town could use a Silt Strider <EDIT: OR HOOMCART>? It seems kind of strange that it's lacking one and it's probably an easy fix BC could make without much effort.

Another thing I thought of, since this place doesn't have an inn, it could be a nice opportunity to stress the whole gravity aspect of Redoran philosophy. Just a thought I had, feel free to disregard it, BC.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: the exterior was lacking trapdoors for the guard towers, you'll have to add and link those yourself. I'd have done it for you but I was short on time. I also made some slight edits to the original post with some suggestions.

Lol hoomcart - NOOO (echoes off the mountains) to that.
Silt Strider? Yeah, this could do with that.

Actually Adan is making / made a hoomcart which could be very interesting for use as a transport in the northern areas (like, north of the Ash Swamp). I agree Silt Striders are probably more useful here though.

Is there a relatively up-to-date map that can put this claim in geographical context for me? Otherwise I'll just download the main map 4 file and scout around.

I presume the region is Velothi Mountains?

It's the very northwestern part of M4, where the mountains and foothills begin in earnest. To the northwest and southwest are more mountains, to the east a coastal region. I'd include the town itself in the VM, yes, though Nemon might have more specifics. It might be more accurate to describe it as "Velothi Foothills", or something along those lines.

Well the map linked in the top post should suffice I guess: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/83265276/map4-diff.png

Being at the border between the velothi mountains and roth roryn, we might refer to it as velothi foothills, although no such region has been decided on.

Just as a note, looks like the interiors for this claim got a bit screwed up during merge, as I only have doors and DoorMarkers for all of them. It's no problem for me to remerge all the ints (thanks for the links up top, Why!) but just a heads up that something's clearly gone a little awry in the merging process.

...Oh. Oops. Sure, go ahead, if it's not too much trouble.

Alternatively you can delete the doors from the ints and then merge them into the provided file, that should preserve the links and save you some tedious work.

Here's the first WIP, with all NPCs placed in Verarchen.

The first manor (i2) belongs to the Nirem family with their retainers - they're a settled down family group, who are comfortable in the easygoing (by Redoran standards) environment of Verarchen. Their two children are both 'stealth inclined' rather than warriors, and are upcoming Agents in the Great House.

The second manor (i12) belonds to the Llalims, a relatively prestigious family in the Redoran old guard. Their youngest son is also not a traditional warrior though, prefering magic. The Llalims are host to a number of visiting Redoran aspirants who receive training from the Llalim steward/master-at-arms Goren Vonith, and in exchange provide service to the Llalim family.

A strider port has been added to the town.

Also, there's an Ancestral Tomb missing an int in -16, -6. Do we have any spare that I could just import here, or do we need to put up a claim (or remove the ext entrance?)

The tomb has been mentioned in the OP; don't bother doing anything with it.

Too bad I can't playtest this claim without switching off TR_Map4 :( Wondering if we could split all of map 4 rather than having the rest of it in limbo.

I've been cultivating this file since I started cutting pieces out of M4, it might be of help to you arvis. I should probably upload it somewhere proper.

I like those NPC plans and the way you've dressed them. Keep up the good work. Feel free to bump one of the i12 people up to House Father or Councilman rank.

I'm potentially out of action for the next couple of weeks, so I'm throwing up my latest WIP file: I tweaked a couple of NPCs in Verarchen, and moved a bunch of city folk out to the structure overlooking the lake.

I also added one shady Imperial who might have quest related connections to one of the outlanders in town. Was thinking perhaps he served in the Legions with that Orc trader, and knows something shady from his past.

Inspired by the general spirit of progress and "I aten't dead" that seems to be going around atm, here's an update for Verarchen with all local dialogue implemented.

If I get time I'll try and finish this thing: implement a quest or two, write up some unique flavour dialogue and topics, and sort out the wilderness cells.

On the latter note, we don't seem to have any levelled lists for creatures for the Velothi Mountains/foothills implemented yet. Arvisrend, do you have any thoughts on this given that you're the expert on all things levelled-list?

Thanks for taking this, BC! Not wanting to burden you even further, but you might also want to playtest some recent changes to quests and give some comments if you have minor slots of time for TR these days. Don't feel pressed, though.

The new data file (hopefully soon in the TR_Data browser) has some TR_stc_velothis* levlists. The area you're doing should be d05/d09/d01/ND throughout (so d05 on roads, d09 off roads, d01 for sleep, and no diseased critters). For sleep creatures, use TR_stc_wild_sleep at the moment; I forgot to make one for the Velothis (but it wouldn't differ from the wild one right now anyway).

We need something to fill the d15 list eventually. Shalk don't feel home on icy mountaintops, and wolves might be too Solstheim and too strong. Any kind of coyote and foxes?

Hi Crustacean, how is this one going and how is life? I wish I could get this claim for one day to fix the ext bugs so that we won't get them reported again and again by people downloading our alpha. It doesn't matter if quests are finished, in work or not started yet.

No progress on quests, I'm afraid - real life's just too much busyness and stress atm. I'm afraid my hobby time is all going in to teambuilding in Pokémon Y. :P

Haha, my kickass team is all bred up and ready on Pokemon, so that's not taking up hobby time any more, BUT I am LOOdicrously busy with real life work, having just been hired in my first full-time job.

If there are other claimants out there, feel free to revoke this. As when I last left it, what's needed is unique dialogue for whoever in town merits it, and quests.

When you get around to posting here, BC, could you describe what your plans were for implementing unique dialogue? I'd like to include as much of your vision as possible. Any quest plans you have floating around in your head would also be helpful.

Also, concerning this rumor:
The girl from the Orothi clanstead stormed into town again last week. It must mean matters are still unsettled at their holding out to the northwest.
What exactly are the "unsettled matters" mentioned here? Something that hasn't been planned yet? I only ask because
the vagueness of this rumor struck me as slightly off-putting.

Otherwise, it looks like you did a bang-up job on this claim. :)

I believe I have finished BC's claim, adding unique dialogue (probably a little more than I should have, but I think it's fitting for the area) adding creatures and populating wilderness interiors. Am I correct in assuming that region editing is handled at a separate stage? The Velothi Mountain region isn't included in Data, it seems.

Here's the unique Background I gave the two noble dudes.

Nolder Llalim

I am Nolder Llalim, Master of the Crests of Verarchen, father of the House Redoran, patriarch of the Kartúr Council and shield-companion to Crab-Chief Athyn Sarethi of the Stones' March. I guard the ancient fortress-village of Verarchen.

Olven Nirem

I am Olven Nirem, March Captain and shield-companion to Nolder Lalim the Master of Crests of Verarchen. My family has long enjoyed a comfortable life in Verarchen.

Quest plans will soon follow.

Regions in the past have been added as we decided them once the maps had been completed. However, now we know of several regions in advance, and can add them to TR_Data now. Velothi Mountains is one, are there any more off the top of your head (I'm in the middle of a bunch of things atm so can't think of any more)?

Crab makes more sense to me, what with the Skar and all. Come to think of it, I don't even think there are any scarab-inspired creatures in the game.

Your House Redoran overview was very helpful when writing dialogue, Sload. :)

Edit: Didn't see Haplo's post at first. Regions yet be included in data that we might need in the near future:

Hey, really great job finishing this off, Yeti!

I especially love your dialogue for the Imperial armourer, he's great - maybe he could do with a unique rumour/advice as well? He's a fun character for the player to chat to.

Couple of small points spotted: in his Greeting 7, Nolder Llalim calls himself 'Lalim'. In the Verarchen topic, Goren Vonith says that Verarchen is to the north west - it's to the south west. (Also that dialogue (and Tirell's) makes it sound as if it's far away, rather than just down a small dirt track -- they're basically in the town, despite not sharing the cell name.)

Here's the final file from me. No quest plans yet; I need more time to brainstorm. This also still needs the int for the ancestral tomb people were talking about in previous posts.

I'll just go ahead and send this to review.

Will do, moving this to "Finished" as the NPCing work will be reviewed in the proper section once it's made.
