Crucifigo's Concept Art

Post by Crucifigo »

So well I've never been involved in TR before, but I'm a long, long, looooong time Morrowind fan and I'd love to do anything to help so, yeah. I have a semi-roleplay blog for writing headcanons and such and I use it to post concept-style art of creatures and things. So I'll be dumping links to all that stuff here in case it's useful. I have a strong interest in corprus so I tend to draw/write a lot related to that in particular.

Thank you, I'd love to! I actually just drew some of the plants from Morrowind, perfect time to start making my own.

Scribbled up some stuff. If you're looking for undead/flesh creatures like the examples I can definitely do that, it's what I specialize in normally.

Thank you so much! I'll be doing plenty more, I want to try and get into doing concept art for indie games part-time eventually. This is really good practice since I started drawing again.

Last WIP upload for today, need to get some sleep.

Very nice images! As it's rather late where I live, I'll keep my reply short, but hopefully I'll remember to provide proper feedback to your concepts tomorrow:

This thread contains a discussion of flora we may need. None of the concepts are final, and it's not quite clear what plants we'll end up needing, but for that very reason it might be worthwhile for you to turn your attention that way and try out some ideas. That and the fact that the thread is in the concept art forum but has very little actual concept art at the moment, which needs to change.
Here are threads of two focus regions, the Othreleth Woods and Alt Orethan. They're pretty large threads, but I think just looking at the images should give you a rough idea of what visuals we are (currently) going for.

As far as creatures are concerned, this thread might be worth looking at, though it also contains a lot of text to work through. I think a lot of your creatures already fit within the perimeters discussed in that thread, though.
Of your concepts, the elephantine creature three posts up stood out to me in particular. Perhaps it could be developed into a large moose-like creature that stalks (north)western Morrowind? My main suggestion for it would be to try changing the teeth on its 'trunk' to feelers, as they seem to serve little purpose at the moment.

While I'm at it, I should mention that atmospheric concepts of (in particular) House Indoril, House Hlaalu and various TR regions, such as those linked above, are also always very welcome, if you ever feel like indulging in landscapes or the like.

Thanks for the feedback, that's really helpful. I'll start looking through the threads and get to work. I mocked up a sheet here with all my art so far I've done already. If you want to use any of the writing on my blog, go ahead. It's there to entertain people and flesh out the world a little more, it's all tagged.

The Bittercrab looks cool, could see that being used in the southern-half near Dres lands.

Crucifigo gets it. Snails could be more clustered, like this and a contrasting colour to the plant, but otherwise 10/10.

Oh I can totally do that adjustment! I just scribbled them in to show that well, snails. Snails everywhere. I keep snails myself, absolutely ridiculous little creatures.

I like the idea of some shelled, slug-like creature. Maybe not a snail per-se, but a type of ashen-colored slug with an ash rock shell.

As promised, (though a day late), I'll be going through your designs in more detail. Warning: a lot of text.

I think the snail clusters could work for the Othreleth Woods, (though the Ash Swamp would be another direction to go), but I'm not entirely sold on them being snails or slug-like. Really the shells are the most important part of the design; I'd sort of like to see some more unusual variants as opposed the typical snail shell, such as this or this or maybe something like this.

The wasp-like creatures make my think of Skyrenders (that's an unfinished model), though your design already looks rather different. Maybe try and do something different with the wings? These images might make for a good start. The grub also looks very similar to kwama foragers. Another direction would be to go full Skyrender and draw the various stages of a Skyrender life-cycle.

Turning to your crab concepts, I don't think crabs should get too much representation; I find them more interesting if they are rare, and think what species there are should look very distinct. (See the molecrab, and for that matter the mole crab).
That being said, House Redoran is associated with crabs, so I think a few solid crab designs for Redoran regions wouldn't do any harm.
Of the crabs in your image, the horsecrab rather strikes my fancy. I'd like to see it a little larger, (camel size?); I think it might be interesting for Redoran commanders to use a crab as a sort of biological, elephant-less Howdah. A more drab crab native to the Ash Swamp would also be an idea worth exploring, as would a furry crab. (None of those ideas are mutually exclusive).
As for the moose-like creature in the same image, I feel it looks too mammalian; I personally prefer the direction you were going with the elephant-like creature I commented on last time.

As for the undead creatures sheet, most of those creatures only work when placed on flat surfaces, which limits their versatility. I'd also argue that they look more like Daedra or 6th House abominations than typical undead, though that's hardly a bad thing. The turret and the skeleton ghosts are both interesting ideas I'd like to see further developed, though I don't think new undead are very high on TR's priority list for new creatures, so (as is the case with all concept art) I'm not sure if anything would come of it.

On the the image before that, with the elephantine creature: the creature at the top right reminds me of the Alit, and, much like the Alit, it looks very ungainly. That's not really a bad thing, but I think you could try and make the design more compact; basically draw in its upper body until it almost appears to be in the fetal position, so that the center of gravity is above its legs, sort of like this. (I seriously could not think of a better reference...) I think the creature has potential as a high-level, rather large predator probably found in plains. (Really ashlands are the first thing that springs to mind, such as the Armun ashlands).
The bird-like thing below it looks too birdlike, in my opinion; I'd suggest changing the beak, maybe to something like that of the Archaeopteryx or something unusual like the beak of the pterosaur I linked above. I'd also try something different with the talons; maybe it walks on its knuckles, switching over to a more typical run when it's in a hurry? This sort of thing is probably done to death with fantasy creatures, but the principal of unusual talons might also be worth exploring; maybe something like an owl talon?
The compact wooly creature would make rather efficient use of the bounding box, but I'm not sure if there's really a niche for it beside the Hoom, which has a similar body structure, and it would also probably look odd when on uneven ground, due to Morrowind's inability to have creatures conform to the terrain.
I like your sort of walrus-like creature, but am not sure if there is space for it beside the Horker. (Those creatures starting with 'h' are really filling all the niches. :P)
The anatomy of the four-wing bird looks a little odd; I'm not quite sure how its skeletal structure would look. It also doesn't appear to be especially suited for Morrowind; to me it looks more like something one might find in Valenwood.
As for the eel, I feel as though it isn't really distinctive enough, and am not sure whether we need more underwater creatures.

Turning to your plants in the post before that, I rather like the Khajiit Paw plant, and think that, with minor adjustments, it could work for the Deshaan Plains. (Its green stalk is the main problem I have with it. Not sure whether it should be beige, or some sort of pale, opaque blue, or maybe something darker like this horn.
The other plants look as though they're intended for the Argon Jungle, but I'm rather hesitant to delve into that region, as it is one of the least established regions; I'd personally like to go more in the direction of a swamp much like this image, but naturally darker, more foreboding, and very dangerous, but it's quite possible we will make it a more proper jungle, or do something else entirely.
As for the other image in the same post, that creature again looks very much like it belongs to the 6th House or is Daedric, in this case specifically a servant of Hermaeus Mora. We unfortunately have no use for the latter, and I doubt we'd add new 6th House creatures, as the 6th House would not have any extensive presence on the mainland.

Of the images in your first post:
-I like the nix-hound subtypes. The top one works well for ashlands, (as I imagine was intended), while that bottom one would work well for a plain such as the Deshaan, though I actually think it might work better in Telvannis, whenever we return to it, roving amongst the bug herds.
-I think there's a bit of dialogue in Morrowind establishing that only Dunmer become corprus beasts, but I could be very wrong. As with 6th House creatures, though, I'm not sure if TR would add corprus variants, as much potential as there is for variants.
-I like the idea of a Dwemer prosthetic; it makes me think of Gottfried von Berlichingen's iron hand. I'm not sure if there would be a use for it, though; while it could be a unique item, it's a prosthetic rather than a gauntlet, so the player couldn't really wear it. Unless there is a really good reason for it, such as an important questline or something, I think modelling such a complex unique item would be more trouble than it is worth.
It would make for a very interesting schematic, though.
-I like your mixed animals, but don't think any of them really stand out enough from other creatures and designs. In particular, while I like the rat variant, rats work as an analogy to outsiders in Morrowind, so I do not think we would want an endemic variant of it.
-as far as the mandrake is concerned, I personally imagine that sort of thing to be native to High Rock.
-I like your siltstrider relative, but think that, in this case, too, there isn't really a large enough niche for it.

Thanks for all the feedback! I spotted this image, I thought it might be of interest.

Here's the revised elephant. It well, has a moose-y head now and more skin creases.

Revised Alit creature. I was thinking a large counterbalance above the pelvis would counteract the sheer weight of the muscle and plating of the head, along with increased weight below the ankles. Otherwise something of their shape and thickness would be far too likely to tip over head-first.

T-rex supposedly had incredible muscle power in their arms, enough to lift themselves off the ground after resting, which I think could apply here using the increased length of the arms when in a resting animation.

A slug-lie creature would be awesome, I think. I do agree that the shell would be the main focus of the model, but an ashen slug-like beast that blends into the scenery until you stumble upon it and it begins attacking you would be awesome to have the in ash swamps. also it would be an interesting new type of enemy to deal with, because it could be slow-moving but bulky as hell (read, it would have a lot of health), which is a bit different from any other type of creature we've dealt with before. also makes sense in a eco-centric way too, because slugs tend to help decomposition of flora, and a type of "slime" as an alchemical ingredient would be cool and could multiple places in the gameworld.

I imagine the dres would like to use it if we made a southern morrowind variation of it too, a type of "slime" with glowing properties. like a lightning bug in real life can have it's glowing juice shit rubbed off and it will illuminate for a short time on whatever you rubbed it on...

I really like the idea that it blends in extremely well. I played the Creatures X mod a bit a long time ago, the smaller critters always caught me off guard because they didn't stand out.

Slugs will eat practically anything and need moisture, they could have spawn points around specially placed NPC and animal corpses around watering holes?

Mwgek did make some glowing larvae for Dres a while back. One thing I would keep in mind with small creatures is that they tend to have small bounding boxes, making them harder to hit. Though that probably isn't too much of a problem if the bounding box at least fits the creature properly. (The bounding box for TR's old Daedric Bat comes to mind). It's probably better if the really small critters are passive. Anything forager-sized or larger should be fine, though.

The ash swamp is one location where creatures like slugs could work fairly well, as it's a pretty flat region.

As for the elephantine creature, I was thinking of something more along these lines (forgive my low-quality vandalism of your drawing):

Basically a fusion in function of an elephant's trunk and this, at the same time creating similarities to insects, which is generally a bonus when dealing with Morrowind.

As for the Alit, the idea of a counterweight is interesting, though I think its shape could use a bit of work. But, as I've already started scribbling over your art, and just to make sure you understand what I meant with my original post, here's another quick drawing:

When attacking, the head could then shoot forwards as in your original image. I think either method (counterweight or changing the posture) is worth pursuing.

Edit: the head could also naturally be further forward when running, where the problem of balance isn't as large. I do like your idea of illustrating the arm strength through the resting animation.

Very nice! As far as I'm concerned, the elephant is perfect. The alit is also looking good; it's arms look very human in that image, but I assume giving them the plating and such that covers the rest of the animal will mitigate that. However, I just realized that it is starting to resemble the Daedroth. I'm not quite sure the best way to disassociate it; maybe change the shape of its nape? You could also try shifting the spot where its arms connect to the torso.

the slug wouldn't have to be small by a means, maybe 50% the size of a vanilla mud crab. can you draw up a concept slug with different types of shells please, Crucifigo??

Sure thing, I can start that tomorrow morning since it's really late here.

Yeah, I think you've got it with the fourth one. You could also bulk up its head or neck a little (maybe make the head bigger or longer?) to balance with the bulkier torso, but otherwise I think it's perfect.

Depending on the shape of its cranium, I could imagine the large plate with the ear holes on the creature's head being used as a sort of natural scullcap... actually, I can't just imagine it, I can also make a tiny picture to illustrate it:

I don't mean to get you sidetracked from your creature concepts, Crucifigo, but I was wondering if you'd like to do some art for in-game use.

I'm talking new frescoes, murals, or paintings.

For example, right now we have only these four Velothi frescoes. Possible subjects for frescoes could be:
* Saint Nerevar battling against the Nord King Wulfharth at Red Mountain. Two towers of men wrangling on the edge of a volcanic crater.

* Almalexia and Sotha Sil fighting against Mehrunes Dagon over the ruins of Mournhold.

* The Daedra Lord Boethiah eating the elven hero Trinimac as horrified High Elves look on.

* Vivec teaching his followers to breathe underwater and flooding Morrowind to drown the Akaviri invaders (could be pictured as snake people or ice demons or something else entirely).
I'd also really like a grand wall mural depicting the signing of the Treaty of the Armistice and Tiber Septim accepting Vivec's surrender. Painted sort of in this romantic style:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/93/Siege-alesia-vercingetorix-jules-cesar.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Anne-Louis_Girodet-Trioson_001.jpg
Anyways, if you feel more like designing new critters that's mighty fine too. You're doing superb job either way! :)

Sorry I didn't get the slugs done today yet, been really busy. I don't know if I can actually paint a fresco..? I mean I can try, but I can't guarantee anything will come of it. I'm not good at the whole painting thing, I've always been a ballpoint pen person. I'll give it a go though and see what happens.

Oh, well then, ahaha thanks! Using a golden overlay for the colour, looks better than the grey-ish colouring underneath. Shouldn't take me too long to fill out the whole picture.

Great work, Crucifigo! I have never had this much of a "Morrowind concept art" feeling when staring at concept art before. I can't wait to see some of these ingame.

Well, here's the finished result, the death of Trinimac/creation of Malacath painting. Makes me remember why I don't enjoy painting.

Oh, that's marvelous. Takes a little interpretation to understand it through the Malacath creation myth, but that's by no means an issue (makes the fresco much more reusable in varying locations). If you dislike painting, actually, using just a ballpoint pen to create the frescoes is alright; the other frescoes are pretty much monochromatic too, and the colors come largely from the stone texture over which they're pasted.

Great work Crucifigo! Would it be alright if I fashioned your painting on a fresco model so we could include it in-game ASAP? I would perhaps have to crop it a bit and make it a little less opaque if that's not an issue for you.

Go ahead and do what you like with it, I'm useless with modding and textures and all that stuff, can't understand it in the slightest. Just here to help after all.

This is my ballpoint style, partially ruined by the scanner. Normally they're very dark and have a 3D depth, but scanning ruins that. Perhaps photos would be better? I also do a digital version of my ballpoint work. So that's those examples if you want me to do frescoes in ballpoint pen or tablet.

Oh, also, if you need any help with quest planning or writing I'm up for it. I took a look at the quests in your signature and I'm loving the nix-hound one, if anything it makes me want to write a review on doped nix-hounds.

Update: Here's a sketch for the ash slug. Technically if it has a shell, it will either be a semi-slug or a snail, or a hermit crab-type animal.

Some really nice concepts in here. I would've never thought the boiled scrib could ever seem appealing but that sketch has sold me on it :) I have an idea for a velothi mountain dwelling insectoid-elk that I think your Ash dog could partially lend itself to. It kind of has the same colour scheme as a Venezuelan poodle moth (google it if you've never seen one - it's adorable).

Are you up for some collaboration?

Oh jeez, I haven't been here in a while. Holiday season was really busy. I'm up to give it a go, it sounds interesting. I can't guarantee I'll manage to make it work but I hope I can.

Hey I'm still alive here, started studying again for the first time in two years so priorities and all that. If there's any concepts you wanna throw at me I'll give them a go when I'm done with this.

bonus WIP

Edit: Here's what I've got so far on it: Stuff

A redraw, base body structure, joints and various horn styles. I shortened down the fluff and made it more concentrated to look more like the hair on a bug and added flaps around a possible mouth opening with the proboscis. If it has one, idk, just throwing ideas around.

I also pushed the eyes out a little further, didn't get round to making different eye colours or patterns for the body because I'm really, really bad at colour schemes.
