Midgard

Post by Asylum »

I know i've been absent for a while and i hope that i can get back to TR without RL interuptions.

but now to the subject of my post. i found the official website of a game which is set in the viking era and has great consept art, and the great thing is this game was never finished and released. so i tought a lot of you could get some nice idea's from brousing trough the consept art of this game. I hope you will not recreate the work these people did because it won't be creative and the work is copyrighted, just use it as a guidline of some sort for skyriim.

A good idea, and may speeed up concept art and modelling, but i think material for Skyrim is already abundant in the Form of the Bloodmoon pack and most of the sutff that came with that. No offense.

No Skyrim will be much more than just Solstheim scaled up many times. I think this (non)game does offer a good source of inspiration, it has some nice art and images of Viking stuff. Yet as Asylum said, we should mainly use our own imagination, but some might find a little creative support in things like this.

If we are going to create Skyrim only in the style of the bloodmoon houses it's gonna get boring from the minute you step into the first village because you have seen it all, in skyrim you have 9 holds like the dumner houses so you will have some very different styles among them.

Good work Asylum. We should create a list called "Links for Skyrim Inspiration". It could be a list of links which give info on traditional nordic culture and different galleries of concept art.

I like these pics from the concept gallery:

I think we ended up with six styles and I am unsure how many are done. This could definitally help create one or two of the styles.

I once found a lot of consept art from another game (one from microsoft) and downloaded it. I went to look at the site again and I just saw this game is cancelled also. i'll try and upload some consept art later, the game is mythica and can/could be found here: http://www.mythica.com
I think they removed all their consept art and other images they had...

It seems that i don't have a large part of the art from mythica, but i'm trying to recover a lot of it..

never actually know the theme until you metnioned it...

guess i just kinda ignored the obviousity(sp) of the thing cuz i think of the game as a completly out-of-earth world ;)

in that case, maybe we should consult something like A*E II for vikings eh? hahahahahhha

(sorry, can't help it.)

As I'm sure most of you know, the Nords are a complete ripoff of Earth's Norse mythology. Take Sovnegarde (or however its spelled,) for example, the Nordic 'heaven.' It's a total rip-off of Valhalla, while Solstheim even means, in ancient Norse, 'Land of the Sun.' Garde I'm pretty sure means 'world' (from Midgarde, Asgarde, etc.) so I imagine Sovnegarde means something too.

Perhaps we can do more of this and integrate more Norse mythology into the Nordic culture, when we finally arrive at Skyrim. I don't recall Ragnarok being ripped-off yet, so that's at least another of the things we could add (under a different name and all.)

I don't know anything about the Tongues (aren't those the Nordic Gods?) but I'd imagine they're also merely the Norse Aesir under a different name.

Sovnegard could be translated as sleepguard. Sleep as the death resting.. :)

The Tongues are powerful Nord Warriors, not gods of any kind. They use their voice as a weapon, however some are so powerful they cannot speak except when using it as a weapon.

Now although the Nords are most heavily borrowed from the Norse they aren't a complete copy so we have to be carefull what we do. It also borrows from other nothern cultures. Also I would think the tongues come from somewhere but I can't recall anything at the moment.
There creation myth involves a giant serpent that eats itself. You have to remember that almost all religions involve either the eadra or deadra in some form as well as a few lesser gods.
